Garlic And Fish Oil For High Blood Pressure

I have seen many high blood pressure (BP) "natural" medications that people claim to wipe out their blood pressure. The problem is that they can never be verified.

And if you say that something isn't a really good natural high blood pressure fighter then you are classed as "in bed with the drug companies".

But when Garlic and Fish Oil are coming round as being BP saviors... this has to be checked out.

Garlic first. It has been well known that Garlic reduces cholesterol. 500mg of Garlic taken over the course of many years (7 in the study) found that it protected arteries from becoming stiff and hardened (due to cholesterol build up).

The compound within garlic that does all the wonderful stuff is called Allicin.

Now indirectly Cholesterol has an effect on Blood Pressure (narrowing of arteries reduces the diameter and increases blood pressure), however Garlic has not been proven to show that it actually causes a direct link to BP.

In fact there are plenty of ways to reduce your BP without having to take Garlic that are more more effective, practical and potent.

Now onto Fish Oil.

This all comes from the Northern Inuit people who have fewer heart attacks, lower cholesterol and a decreased tendency to have blood clots than non-Inuits. Obviously the main reason is that they eat a lot of Whale, Fish and Seal meat... all packed full of Fish Oils?

Fish Oils basically increase the good cholesterol in our bodies and decrease the bad cholesterol.

But, when researched...

The very large doses capsules that are required to be beneficial on BP and cholesterol actually have no effect upon the bad cholesterol.

Large doses have been linked to bleeding, and Vitamin A and D toxicity (A and D are found within Fish Oil).

What some people do not realize is that Fish Oils are naturally fattening and have a high calorie count- which defeats the object to loose weight to reduce your high blood pressure.

But there is a silver lining.

Eating fish (rather than taking the supplements) like Mackerel and Salmon (not tinned Tuna) can actually reduce your BP by an average of 15 mmHg.

Eating the "oily fish" can actually reduce vascular disease and possible protect against heart disease.

For some reason therefore the supplements in large doses have no effect and can actually have a detrimental effect on your Cholesterol/ BP. But eating oily fish can have a positive effect.

Sometimes though we just don't want to keep on eating our way to a healthy body. Wouldn't it be easier (and cheaper) to do about 45 minutes of simple and easy body movements and then be able to reduce your blood pressure?

A Garlic Pill a Day Helps Keep High Blood Pressure at Bay

It is a common experience amongst those of us with hypertension that the medication prescribed by our doctors only manages our condition. We were expecting nothing less than a complete cure. As we live with our high blood pressure we realize that we need something to supplement our medication, to make it more effective and if possible, to wean us from the drugs we are taking. Fortunately for us, there is such a supplement. It is garlic.

The benefits of garlic

Garlic was known to the ancient Egyptians who built the Great Pyramids; it was known to the ancient Greeks; it was known to the Romans; and, it was well-known in the Middle Ages when it was used to combat the Black Death.

How does garlic lower blood pressure?

Our BP rises as our body increases production of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Garlic contains a natural ACE inhibitor. This, combined with the high amounts of allicin found in garlic give it its ability to dilate arteries, thereby lowering our BP readings.

How effective is garlic in reducing hypertension?

In a recent trial conducted by the University of Adelaide, Australia, 50 hypertensive patients who were taking prescription drugs for their condition were given a garlic supplement in 960mg capsules. Their systolic pressure was found to be much lower after 12 weeks of taking the supplement.

Patients in the trial who had a systolic reading above 140mmHg saw it drop 10.2 lower on average than a control group on a placebo or dummy pill. This reduced the BP readings of some patients down to healthy levels. The significance of this result should not be underestimated. A 5mmHg drop in systolic pressure reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by between 8 and 20 per cent.

How to get the most benefit from garlic

Much of the allicin is destroyed when garlic is heated, so it is not as effective as raw garlic. To ensure a consistent dosage of the active ingredients and also to avoid "garlic breath", many people prefer a good quality garlic supplement taken in capsules.

It would be easy to think that popping a garlic pill everyday is all that you need to do to lower your high blood pressure. The greatest benefit comes when garlic, either raw or a supplement, forms part of a healthy balanced diet designed to reduce hypertension, such as the DASH dietary guidelines. You should also take regular exercise.

If you are looking to lower your hypertension naturally, a garlic pill a day will help to keep high blood pressure at bay.
